5 year old son experienced colon impaction, loss of feeling in feet, unsteady gait, lethargy, along with symptoms of neck strain, 6-8 weeks after being in 50 mph rear end accident (estimated 20-25 mph speed of impact), impact ocurred directly behind him. being treated by chiropractor for dislocated pelvis. can i do more? the chiropractic only lasts until he jumps around and throws his hips back out of alignment. Reply to Andy R's Post: more or less. occasional constipation is treated with miralax. impaction cleared with miralax. distention of colon has shrunk to normal and impaction has been cleared with same, but #2 potty accidents occur between chiropractic adjustments, coinciding with misalignment, that seems to be resulting from normal play activities for my now 6 year old. sought chiropractic adjustment for neck strain/back pain 10/06. accident occured 5/30/06. e/r for lethargy 12/06. xray shows pelvic misalignment, low spine slightly curved away from force of collision. anomometry test showed slight elevation in pain/pressure tolerance. time between chiropractic adjustments depends on physical activity level and misalignment symptoms.

As you know, a child of this age will not allow an injury like this to heal due to their activity. There may be a brace or wrap that can be used to keep his pelvis relatively still and still allow for his activity. Other than that, immobilization with a cast may be a solution (not fun for anyone).

You may want to get a second opinion from an orthopedic specialist as well.

Reply to Andy R's Post: well, one of the problems i have is that no one can tell me what doctor would specialize in this type of problem. we have been to several specialists, including, but not limited to; gastrointerologist, urologist, neurologist, family practicioner and the first thing they say is, "well, first of all, these symptoms were not caused by this car accident," to which i say, "well, what did cause them?" and the answer is always, "well, i am not exactly sure, but it probably was not this accident." and i ask, "why?" and the reply is "well, because we have seen other children with these types of symptoms before, and they weren't in car accidents." and i say "oh, so if all dogs have four legs, then all animals with four legs must be dogs, right?" and the response is a blank look and "well maybe you should see another specialist, we don't really deal with that here anyway." By the way, did i mention we don't have health insurance? We have not taken our son to any orthopaedic physicians. Who do we see?

It appears that are pretty much locked in with the chiropractor. Talk to him about a brace or wrap.

Reply to Andy R's Post: i have more or less accepted that the chiropractors treatment of basically "reversing the blunt force," by manipulation, may be the best thing we have going for us, but you mentioned an orthopaedic specialist. how would one find such a specialist who might be familiar with blunt force trauma to the pelvis and its resulting symptoms?

you can contact your local medical association and ask for a referral, giving them the requirements for blunt force trauma.

Thanks
