If the sleeplessness is a temporary problem caused by acheiving a new developmental state, a move to a new bed, house, or room, worry or excitement over an upcoming or previous event, or other temporary reason, any medication is not appropriate. If the sleeplessness is caused by night terrors, sleep apnea, depression, or anxiety, amitriptyline is occasionally prescribed, but SHOULD only be prescribed by a child psychiatrist, and only if the sleeplessness is caused by night terrors or depression. If neither of these is the case, it is potentially dangerous to give a child unnecessary amitriptyline, as it could cause severe side effects much worse than the lack of sleep.
