My girlfriend, 21, woke up last night crying about a sharp, tight pain from her sternum down to just beneath her right breast. She also said an area of her back hurt bad. She complained that it hurt when she would breathe and move. It has lasted well over 7 hours and won''t go away. It hurts enough that she can''t sleep or get comfortable. She had been compliaining a couple of times in the last 2 weeks that it hurt when she would breathe in the sternum area but eventually it would go away. What do you think is the problem?

she is most likely having a condition that is called as costochondritis which is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects the ribs to the breast bone...

the symptoms of this condition include:

sharp pain which may be increased by deep breathing and coughing as well...

this condition is benign (harmless) and generally goes away on its own and all that is usually required is pain killers in the form of advil or aleve

the exact cause of this condition is not known..

you can read more about this condition, the causes, symptoms, treatment from the link below:

Your diagnosis sounds pretty good. I do have a few questions.

She has already taken advil, twice, and no relief and this is actually going on 10 hours. What do you recommend for dosage and how much longer can she be expecting this pain to last? Can I have some sort of time frame, and when has it gotten so bad that we would need to go and see a doctor?
