Question

I AM 45 & HAVE MULTIPLE DISABILITIES. ONE THING

Sent to Health Experts January 22, 2006 4:34 p.m.

I AM 45 & HAVE MULTIPLE DISABILITIES. ONE THING HAS BEEN GOING ON IN ABOUT THE LAST MONTH THAT REALLY BOTHERS ME. I HAVE BEGUN TO "FALL ASLEEP" AT ALL TIMES OF THE NIGHT AND DAY, WHEN I AM UP. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHERE I AM. SOMETIMES, IT IS FOR SECONDS, OTHER TIMES FOR MINUTES. I TAKE SEVERAL TYPES OF MEDICATIONS, BUT I HAVE BEEN TAKING THEM FOR YEARS, AND I DON'T BELIEVE IT HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THAT. MY HUSBAND SUGGETED NARCOLEPSY. CAN THAT START UP AT MY AGE, OUT OF THE BLUE? ALSO I HAVE HAD 3 WHAT I CALL BLACKOUT SPELLS WHERE I HAVE DONE WORK ON MY COMPUTER THAT I DON'T REMEMBER DOING, UNTIL I PULL MY HISTORY LOOKING FOR A WEB ADDRESS. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 45

Already Tried:
I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT TO SEE A DOCTOR ABOUT A SLLEP SUDY CONSULT IN FEBURARY. I ALSO HAVE CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME, INSOMNIA, ALONG WITH MANY DISABILITIES...

Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder that usually gains in severity years after first showing symptoms so it is possible with your past history of insomnia that you could have had an underlying case of Narcolepsy and it is becoming worse now. Also with the blackout spells this can be related to a neurological disorder as well. I think the sleep study would be inlightening for you but I feel you might want to get a referral from your physician for a neurologist as these symptoms sound more like a neurological disorder than anything else. There are several medications that are now prescribed for help with narcolepsy but there is no known cure. It is also advised that adding several smalll naps a day can help to fight the urge to fall asleep as with narcolepsy the brain is inable to inable to regulate sleep-wake patterns normally which causes the pattern of falling asleep for unknown reasons. Your body tries to fight the sleep until it is unable then you fall alseep for anywhere from a few seconds to up to an hour in some cases. But with the backout spells you are having being on your computer without even remembering doing work it is best to be seen by a neurologist for further consultation.
