I was taken out of a sound sleep right now with what I thought was a bad muscle cramp in my leg that went from my groin down my left leg. I've got bad arthritis in that left knee, but this is like something I've never experienced before. At first I couldn't even straighten out my leg. I've had charly horses before and I beg to differ that this was not one, those I just jump out of bed and they go away. Not this, this lasted for about one minute and it was excrutiating. I am overweight, I'm suppose to take Lipitor for high cholesterol and I have a family history of heart disease, but I don't suffer from high blood pressure, my pressure has a tendency to be normal or if I feel light headed my blood pressure has gone down. Please help, is this a sign of heart problems, clogged arteries, etc.?

Hi this may be a sign of blood clots or phlebitis, which can become very serious.

It may also be nothing more that a Charley horse due to the way your leg was placed while you were sleeping or a muscle spasm due to a number of different causes - often these occur at sleep transition and can be very, very painful and feel much different than when they occur while awake.

Please answer a few questions!

Do your feet and ankles swell? Can you see your blood vessels in your legs, feet, or ankles? Do you have pain in your toes feet, ankles, or lower leg? Can you feel the pulses in your leg?

If you answer yes to any of these, then you need to make an appointment with your physician and go in for an exam and some test.
