Question

For two years I've had allergy and sleeping problems.

Sent to Health Experts March 02, 2006 1:55 p.m.

For two years I've had allergy and sleeping problems. As a result, I'm beginning to have swollen sinuses and purplish color under my eyes, in addition to occasional sneezing fits and grogginess. Are there preventitive measures against such allergies and eye bags (such as diet, sleeping habits, types of medications, natural treatments, not reading in dim light)? Are there ways to reduce the current allergies and swelling under my eyes?

For the allergies, I've intermittently taken claritin, flonase, and a nasal saline spray (never all at the same time), but the swelling has not receded. Would a nasal solution containing alkalol or some combination of methods help?

For the sleeping, I'm doing much better in recent months and am now getting off doctor-prescribed low-level sleeping medication (remerone). I now sleep about 6-8 hrs per night, but still feel a little groggy. Should I sleep beyond 8 hrs/night if possible, or is this unhealthy?

I'm looking for natural, cheap, long-term ways to remain healthy.

Thanks for your help.

Flixonase needs to be used daily for it to be effective. It is still a pretty good steroid nasal spray, although it is expensive.

Homeopaths recommend a preparation containing pollen or house dust or fungal spores ( or a combination) prepared under homeopathic principles. I had a patient who would use the tablets for two weeks the have six weeks of no symptoms. So this may work for you.

Wearing sunglasses when outside reduces pollen entering the eyes and reduces eye symptoms. Also keep the windows up in the car and check that the car air conditioning system is fitted with a pollen filter.

The average adult sleeps 6 - 8 hours a night. Ensure your curtains are really thick to reduce early morning light. Go to bed with a regular routine. If I have trouble getting off to sleep I listen to radio plays, other people listen to classical music. If you are getting the full nigts sleep and you still feel tired during the day then ask your doctor to check your iron and thyroid levels.

Use of witchhazel compresses will help reduce the puffiness and bags under the eyes.

Hope this info helps.

Thank you, Pauline, but I already knew most of these solutions (e.g. thick curtains in bedroom, nightly routine, witchhazel compress, pollen filter in car). I guess as an allergy and insomnia sufferer, I've become a pseudo-expert in this stuff, and am hard-pressed to find new info. I would, however, be interested in more information about the homeopathic remedies for allergies (how to make or obtain it) and whether flixonase is any more effective than flonase, flunisolide, or beconase.

Thanks, and sorry for not accepting your prior answer.
