Question

sleep disorder?

Actually, I'm asking this for my roommate. She has problem to fall asleep. She claimed that it's my fault, because I wake her up. well.. I did wake her up, but all I did was walking down the hallway to get water, and I did this in less than few seconds and no more than once per night. But she was waked up everytime I did that and she can't fall back to sleep for several hours.   I tried to reduce the noice and the vibration of the floor I caused (we had a thin floor..), but I can't satisfy her. She blame this all on me and thought that I'm inconsiderate.   Two nights ago, she even tired to force me to learn "how to walk without making noise" at 2am! I mean, I do acknowledge that I am not the most elegant person in the world; however, I feel that her behavior is extreme and need to be treated for sleep disorder. Am I right or wrong?

You know, you can either be right or be happy. The thing is you need to work out a compromise.

Is there some reason you cannot have a glass of water by the bed so that you do not have to get up? It is possible she has a sleep disorder and it can be checked out if she asks her doctor for a referral for one.

Her light sleeping may have nothing to do with sleep apnea, which is the most common sleep disorder.

Try and have a conversation that could be fruitful. Leave open the possibility for working things out...and they will.

I do, actually, start to keep a big bottle of water in my room, after I failed her 'walking training'. I didn't think of doing that earlier, because I don't really do that very often (except this week, because I have a cold). I'm not sure this sovle the whole problem though. Becuase she demands that I need to produce no sound at all during 11pm-6am, which I'm afraid that I would accidentally do or naturally do.

I think the point of my question was, it is abnormal for a person to have such difficulty to fall asleep after being waking up by minor noise? Is she healthy? Do she need to seek for help?   Even people closing the door of their cars in the parking lot next to our apartment would wake her up and keep her up for several hours, and we are on the 4th floor.

I'd like to know the answer because I have tried to suggest her to see a doctor, but she thinks that I am the only problem and I need to correct my "bad habit", otherwise, I'm irresponsible. well.. I guess it's fine, if you do think I am irresponsible (I will accept your answer even if you do). But if she is indeed unhealthy, it's not a good thing to let it go. My mom's depression caused her life, and overtime I thought she was just being over-critical on me and didn't get her any help.

This is also a sign of insomnia as well as if she gets awakened and once awakened is not able to fall asleep for several hours then this can be associated with a sleep disorder. There are several medications out there such as Ambien or Lunesta which are non-narcotic and approved for long time use that work very well for people with this problem so no it is not just you, she may be a light sleeper but she is also most likely suffering from insomnia to if she has that much difficulty falling back asleep. Some people with insomnia will wake to use the restroom and find they are then up for hours on end. She should talk with her physician and until she does I agree with Barbara try to be as quiet as possible as I can relate to sleep problems and I am the same way if I get awakended sometimes it takes hours for me to fall asleep. The Ambien CR has worked very well for me having this problem so she should talk with her physician as the body needs a full nights rest to stay in good condition as well as all the other essentials we need as well.
