pain on lower left side just below the left rib and above the pelvis

Sent to Health Experts April 19 07:35 PM

My son doesn't have health insurance and will have it in one month and he is hoping he can hold out till then as he doen't have the money to pay for this. He had pain on his left side from the bottom of his left rib side to his pelvis. It's sometimes worse than other's. He also has been at the same time swelling on his tongue. I don't know if it is related. He seems to think it is as when his pain flairs up his tongue does too. He is 34 years old has been in excellent health. He is a contractor and builds houses. Hello

It could be possible that his body is trying to pass a kidney stone. If the pain is tolerable, he can probably hold off for a bit to see if it passes. If however, the pain is severe enough to cause him to lose sleep or do daily activities, if he is running a fever, or has blood in his urine, he may need to be seen sooner rather than later.

The tongue swelling wouldn't be related if this is a kidney issue. The first thing I think of with tongue swelling is an allergic reaction of some sort. Has he tried a different food or anything lately?

If he does decide to be seen sooner than his insurance kicks in, I'm sure if he explains this to the doctor they will do minimal testing in order to find out what is wrong, and since he is actively working, they will most likely be able to come up with a payment plan that he can live with.
