Question

I have a normal TSH level (0.8), yet I can't ...

Sent to Health Experts June 11, 2006 12:10 a.m.

I have a normal TSH level (0.8), yet I can't concentrate, I'm experiencing hair loss, I'm hot and sweaty especially at night and have trouble sleeping, my nails are brittle, I'm tired a lot, and though I have reduced my caloric intake and increased my exercise, I can't lose weight. Are there other things I should look at.

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 47

Already Tried:
Had my general practitioner MD take tests back in January. Have tried to increase exercise, though that just makes me more tired. I did have a hysterectomy in October 2005, because of constant heavy bleeding and hyperplasia. I also have insulin resistance. Still, this hair loss, fatigue, and memory difficulty (among other things) has been going on for years.

Are you taking Synthroid,Estrogen replacement therapy or Tamoxifin by any chance.

Also, do you know your t4 levels?

These questions will allow me to better assist you.

Thanks.

No, unfortunately, I don't know my T4 levels. I have the TSH blood test result with me, and a CBC with differential results as well, but nothing else.

Are you currently taking any of the above medications?

Also, take a look at your blood work and see if you show any t4 levels.

You stated:

I did have a hysterectomy in October 2005

And as you say you are on no other estrogen therapy meds?

No estrogen therapy meds at this time. I've tried Black Cohosh, but it seems to be ineffective.

Your complaints may be due to your menopausal state.
Your tsh is not optimal and I would follow it to see if you are in a state of transition. You should have a thyroid profile with thyroid antibiodies as you may also be transitioning through grave's ds, a common thyroid disorder. Ask you doctor to send you to an endocrinologist so the appropriate tests can be done. If this is not an option, then have the above drawn and take it from there. If all is normal or unremarkable repeat in 4-6 weeks. A trial of estrogen may help you to see if it is all due to estrogen deficientcy
