I have a leg pain in my left leg but only after I have sat for a while. When I get up, there is sometimes so much pain from my back down to my knee that I can barely walk. But after taking maybe three to five steps, I am fine. What can it be?

Hello,

You may have what is known as sciatica. I would suggest making an appointment with an orthopedic specialist or even a chiropractor for an accurate diagnosis. I suffer from sciatica and when I have flare ups, I have found the modalities used by the "chiro" has provided me with the best relief.

Here is some information related to sciatica. Please let me know of any questions you may think of.

Back pain often accompanies sciatica. Is the pain a shooting, burning type?

No not really. It is more like it is badly bruised.    It shoots when I stand up from a sitting position and throbs until I have taken four or five steps. Then I am fine and can even run.

I feel it has to do with my sitting. Something happens while I am sitting so that it hurts when I stand up. Then it disappears quickly. I also noticed that if I sit with my legs straigntened out in front of me, it is not so bad.

I think you may be right in that it may be sciatia as I read about it at the Mayo Clinic website onpy because I feel it has to do with my spine.

I also wonder whether it may be a herniated disc?

In the morning when I get up, there is no pain at all. Again, it may be because I usually sleep with my legs straight out.

Yes, it can be associated with a herniated disc.

Also, because sitting place extreme pressure on the sciatic nerve, it is quite common to experience it while sitting.

I just sent you a reply but thought of one more thing that may be significant. My leg hurts only when I have been sitting and then stand up. That is when it hurts. Even when I sit on a toilet, it hurts when I get up. Any sitting position in any place at any time - that is when it hurts when I change from the sitting position to the standing position.

The pain extends only to the knee - never below it.

There is no pain at all while I am sitting. It is only when I shift from sitting to standing.

Hello,

Yes there was a lot of trouble with the website this evening. It posted by answer as a question to you. I hope it wasn't confusing.

Anway, although you do not feel the pain when you are sitting, there is pressure on the sciatic nerve and it is felt when you try to stand a begin to walk.

You can take four 200mg Motrin or Advil as this is a prescription dose. Take it every six hoours and that should help.

Also consider the "chiro" or at leas seeing your doctor.
