Pain in the area where my jaw meets my skull

I am having a lot of pain in the area where my jaw meets my skull. The pain is on the right side. I hurts a lot when I chew. Is the cartilage worn away? Or did I sleep on my face in the wrong way? I haven't been hit in the jaw so I don't think it's dislocated. This pain has been going on for a month now.
