barb,
Your grandson is protected under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) because of his learning disability. If a public school attempts to deny him FAPE (Free and Appropriate Public Education) not only are they in violation of federal law but also provide grounds for legal suit. If your grandson doesn't have an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) he is still protected from disability discrimination if a physician has validated his diagnosis.
All this being said I would strongly advise to contact the following resources to acquire local support:
CHADD (Children and Adults with Attenion Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Florida)
LDonline.org
Family Network of Disabilities
Parent to Parent of Miami
Regarding medicine, I would suggest having him reevaluated by a professional that is thoroughly versed in learning disabilities. Children can potentially be misdiagnosed and/or mismedicated if the diagnostician is not adequately trained in the signs, symptoms, diagnosis, and/or treatment specific to learning disabilities. This being said inquire with with one of the aforementioned organizations for a good recomenation. Since they are familiar with the professionals in your area, the recommendation should be well founded.
