Pediatrics – relative bed-time / awakening time for a 6-month old baby
Sent to Health Experts August 19 10:26 PM

Doctor,

Background: My wife and I have a very healthy 6-month old boy, on track for all developmental milestones, breastfeeding and just starting to eat baby food. His only issue is with sleep. During the day he takes several short naps (between 15 minutes and an hour), which seems to us to be somewhat less than the average baby’s total nap time. We generally begin his bedtime ritual between 5:30 and 6:30 pm, and have him in his crib by between 6:00 and 7:00 pm.

We are currently addressing a problem he has with awakening many times during the night and not falling back asleep without our assistance. We are addressing it by giving him progressively longer periods to try and get himself back to sleep, and we’re confident this approach will work eventually.

Where we do not agree is regarding how to address a related problem … he is waking up between 4:00 and 5:00 am clearly ready to start his day (wants to play, seems well rested and happy, wants breakfast). We would prefer he sleep until at least 6:00 am.

My question: given the above background, is it reasonable to expect our son can be put to bed at ~6:30 pm and have a normal night of sleep, and not awaken to an active state (the time he needs to get up and start his day) until ~6:00 am? Alternatively, if our goal is for him to sleep until ~6:00 am, what time should we be setting as his bedtime, given that he may be napping less than then average baby during the day?

Your opinion will be appreciated!

All the best,
Peter Ward

Congratulations on your healthy boy!

From the information that you have provided, I can see that the major issue here is that your baby is only able to stay in a sleep state for about 9 hours at a time (of course, with the awakenings during the night as well). If you think about it, this is much more than he was able to do just a few months ago. Also, it is not unusual for babies of this age to have periods of lighter sleep during which they may awaken. It sounds like you are dealing with those awakenings.

Your baby reaches an active alert state at 4 AM now. In order for him to not awaken until 6 AM, you should be putting him to bed around 7:30 to 8 PM.

The bedtime ritual is wonderful and you certainly should continue that, but your bedtime is just too early for him.

Try not to allow those cat naps during the day. Instead, use your bedtime ritual for morning and afternoon naps.

No napping after 4-5 PM.

Keep the little guy active, but be careful not to overstimulate after 5 PM.
