Hello,

Esophageal contraction around the stomach are is usually due to longterm acid reflux (als called GERD)from the stomach. The contraction can occasionally spread upwards.

You can do the following things to decrease the acid secretion as well decrease leaking of acid into your esophagus:

- Take sips of ice cold water throughout the day from time to time. This will cool the stomach tissue and decrease acid secretion. Ice-creams and cold custard also work, plus since they are semisolid, they have less chances of trickling upwards.

- Take 4-5 small meals instead of 3 major meals. Ice-cold rice pudding is ideal for you.

- Avoid greasy, fried food.

- Sleep in a propped up position instead of flat on the bed to prevent acid reflux.

- As soon as you wake up in the morning and before getting up from bed, nibble at 2-3 dry crackers. These will absorb whatever acid and gas has collected in your stomach overnight. You are to lie quietly in bed for another 30 minutes.

- Liquid and soild food is not to taken together. Liquids are to be taken at least 1 hour after solids.

- Bananas should be taken whenever you get heartburn as it is capable of forming a mucus coat over the stomach tissues.

- All fruits should be taken as cold as possible.

- You should not do anything that can cause gastric acid to flow upwards. No toe-touching exercises, no leaning forwards to pick up things, no leaning forward to make the beds etc.

- You can take an antacid called Mucaine gel. This contains an antacid as well as a local anaesthetic and willl decrease the hearburn.

- Gelusil is an antacid that contains a substance called simethicone. Simethicone is capable of absorbing gases from the stomach. Less stomach gases mean less acid reflux.

-Ask your doctor for a prescription for Protonix. This is a drug that is used to treat erosive breaks in the lining of the esophagus. Most people who have not had relief from other medications do quite well on Protonix.

I believe that these steps will decrease your GERD to some extent, allowing any inflammation of the esophagus and stomach walls to heal.

I hope this helps.
