sleep noises

My Mother has started to make shouting and groaning noises while asleepAlthough we kno she can't help it,it is becoming quite annoying.She even wakes herself up sometimes.Is there a reason for this.? Thanks Cheryl

Yes, this is well-known in the field of sleep medicine. She may be having sleep/night terrors (scream, loud cry, during sleep, awakens the person slightly) or sleep related groaning (occurs nightly, loud groaning during sleep). Credit for the above to http://asksleepdoctor.com/parasomnias.asp

Does she seem to be sleep deprived (sleepy during the day as if she hasn't slept)? If so, I would recommend a visit to a sleep specialist near you. here may be a study done overnight to assess the number of awakenings she has. If she will not go, she can obtain a consultation vis website from a qualified physician at the above link for a fee.
