Day Dreaming Child

Sent to Health Experts September 22, 2006 11:09 a.m.

My six year old daughter will sometimes zone out and I will have to say her name several times, clap or snap my fingers to bring her back. I became concerned when she did this while riding her bicycle the other day. Is this more than day dreaming and should I be concerned?

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 6

Already Tried:
I have asked her what she was thinking about and if she heard me. I have also asked her to tell me what she heard me say. She usually can tell me exactly what I said and tells me that she was just thinking about random things.

It has occurred while sitting or standing - I think most often standing. And only once on the bike.

Very well. For the first time her teacher did call me this morning to tell me that she spaced out two times yesterday; once while explaining her picture (she stopped in mid sentence and dazed off) and the second time was on the way to lunch, she started wandering from the line. Her teacher told me that she is very intelligent and does well with all of the assignments. It is more frequent when she has had less sleep.

Ok, it does not sound as though she would be classified as ADD or ADHD from the above. I am concerned about her zoning out and wandering from the line. This may be a little more then just not paying attention. I would strongly suggest to watch her for a few days to a week and if this does continue then you should make an appointment with her doctor to discuss it. It may also very well be from lack of sleep or could be some chemical imbalance causing this. As I said she does not fit the picture for ADD/ADHD with her behavior so other avenues need to be explored if after several days of good sleep this continues. Let me know if you need additional assistance and i will be glad to further help you.
