My 19 year old daughter recently started having slight headaches, mostly at night, and also started perspiring at night. She weighs 110 lbs so it is not overweight and there is no obvious cause for the perspiration. what could be causing this in a normal, not overly stressed young woman?

Hi,
There can be various causes for your daughters night headaches and sweating-

  • Migraine
  • Hyperthyroidism - this is an overactive thyroid gland. Read more about it here to see whether your daughter has any other symptoms.
  • Obstructive sleep anoea (OSA) - if your daughter sleeps more during daytime or snores during sleep then she might have this.
  • Diabetes - this is a rare phenomenon at 19 years, but rarely when seen in young, diabetes can present with symptoms of sweating, fatique, headache etc.
  • Medicines or drugs - some medicines can cause these symptoms. Lastly you also need to be sure that she is not on some drugs.

You need to consider the above causes. Most common cause is usually Migraine. A family history of migraine makes it a stronger possibility. But I feel that there is no harm in ruling out the other possibilities as well. She should get her blood sugar and thyroid function tests done and then consult her doctor for further examination and treatment.
