I am dating a 46 year old man who is Daibetic and on a pump. I don't know much about Diabetes but I am reading up on the disease. If something happend to him while he is with me what do I do (besides call 911). How would I know if it was because the sugar dropped to low or if it is to high? Is there a way to know which would be the case? I have heard that you give them juice or soda if it is low, But how would I know if he is unconsience?

Hello,

Symptoms of hypoglycemia or low blood sugar include:

  • hunger
  • nervousness and shakiness
  • perspiration
  • dizziness or light-headedness
  • sleepiness
  • confusion
  • difficulty speaking
  • feeling anxious or weak

Symptoms of hyperglycemia or high blood sugar:

  • dry mouth
  • blurry vision
  • frequent thirst
  • frequent hunger
  • fatigue
  • frequent urination

If he is unconcious you can check blood sugar with a glucometer and give intravenous 50 % Dextrose. If you can not do that the only thing you can do call 9-1-1 or an ambulance to take him to an Emergency Room.

AND he falls asleep constantly. Is there anything that can be done about that? Is it because of the diabetes???

Hello,

You can gently shake him , call his name and ask if he can hear you. If not responsive , you need to check his breathing and pulse and do Cardiopulmonary ressucitation if it is indicated and if you are trained and able to do that until 9-1-1 people or ambulance arrives.

For constant sleep he needs to be seen by a doctor for an evaluation as soon as possible or you can take him to an Emergency Room. It can be due to diabetes or some other causes.
