Question

Unwarranted Hungar

Sent to Health Experts October 06, 2006 11:53 a.m.

I get painfully hungry between meals (at which I eat adequate calories... usually more than adequate). I've been like this my whole life. I am not diabetic, but I am quite sensitive to the rise and fall of my blood sugar. However, this painful hunger is not always related to a corresponding fall in blood sugar. Sometimes it just hurts so bad that I feel like if I can eat "right this second" I'm going to go crazy! It affects my temperament and productivity if I can't get a snack once I am experience this consuming hunger. The problem also persists at night. If I go to bed too late, even after eating dinner at say 6:30 or 7:00, I simply cannot fall asleep because of this gnawing hunger. I've tried to go to sleep anyway, for years, but I just can't. I know it's not great to eat right before bed. Also, if I am awakened during the night and am awake, I am often immediately aware that I'm extremely hungry. Sometimes the hunger itself wakes me up! I struggle with my sleep, so I don't want to get up and eat because it will wake me up too much. On the other hand, falling back asleep is nearly impossible if I don't get a snack. Usually 1/2 a yogurt or some cereal and milk do the best job. Then I can sleep fine. Have you ever heard of this, and do you have any suggestions for dealing with it. I am within my recommended weight zone, but often eat more than necessary at a meal to stave off hunger; I don't want to get caught painfully hungry over the next few hours. Ultimately I have seen this lead to moderate weight gain on my part over time. Please advise. Yours, Hungry.

Already Tried:
I went on Wellbutrin for depression a couple years ago . . . that was the only thing that seemed to work! I know, it makes no sense. But I got along just fine and only had the hunger attacks at night (probably because the Wellbutrin then was not extended release.)
