What would cause my 4 year old to have blue/purple circles under her eyes. Allerigies have already been ruled out. She also has a cough, and sometimes a runny nose (with clear drainage). No fever, no loss of appetite.

Sometimes this can be a symptom of anemia. If your daughter hasn't had a blood test to check this then it may be beneficial to do so, but this is probably not a threat to her immediate health. If she is not already taking a daily children's vitamin supplement, this will help (make sure it has iron in it, the flinstone brand is excellent) and you should ensure that she is recieving plenty of iron in her diet (sometimes children with an aversion to meat have trouble with this).

Additionally you will want to assess her sleeping habits. Sometimes consistancy of a sleeping routine (going to bed at the SAME time every night) is even more important to quality of sleep than the number of hours per night that she is sleeping.

Reply to Mrs. E Brush's Post: Should I be worried that it's something more serious? Are blue/purple circles under the eyes a symptom of something life threatening or more serious like cancers or diseases.

This is not likely a threat to her immediate health and is usually something much more simple. It is important that she be screened for the possibility of anemia, because sometimes chronic anemia is indicitive of something more serious.

When allergies were ruled out, she would have had blood tests for her white count for infection, etc. That to me would assure me that they would have caught something more "serious" like cancer, etc. That does not mean that you should ignore persistant symptoms and if you are concerned that she was not evaluated fully, always be sure to advocate for your daughter and seek a second opinion from another doctor who can also do a complete physical on her.

However, I do not think that this is something serious. Have her get the blood tests for the anemia possibility and you can work from there : )

Reply to Mrs. E Brush's Post: I'm replying to the question you answered for me yesterday. After looking at my doctor's eyes last night, they didn't seem real dark purple or blue, although it was visible enough for me to notice. What I'm really concerned about is why her immune system is so impaired. She just started daycare about 5 months ago and she has been sick almost constantly. Two ear infections and a cold that just won't go away. She's on cough medicine and IMU MAX to help build her immune system - what could be causing her immune system to be so impaired - or is this normal?
