Sent to Health Experts November 05, 2005 3:33 p.m.

I recently got a spinal fusion for my c7 vertabrae, and was told that smoking cigarrettes would hinder the healing process. I was told that it was just the nicotine in cigarrettes that goes straight to your spine that does that. I was trying to check and see if it was specifically nicotine that was the problem, or if sitting around a campfire, or fog machine, or any other type of smoke would also cause issues? Thanks.

REPLIED Check Mark

Smoke, any kind of smoke, when inhaled, can cause your blood vessels to constrict which hinders the healing process. Smoking cigarettes is the route of inhalation that is the most concentrated. I wouldn't worry about sitting around a campfire, or a fog machine.

Hope that helps,

Kerry

Is it the blood vessels constriting that causes the big problem? When I was told that it would be a problem, he made it sound like it was the nicotine that went straight into my spine would cause the problem. Which one is correct? And also, which would cause the bigger problem, the nicotine in my spine or the restricting of blood vessels?

I also have some friends that enjoy smoking recreationally, if you catch my drift, and I didn't know if that kind of smoke would effect the healing process or not? Would I be effected by being in the same area as them, or would it be direct inhaling of it that would cause me harm. Would it cause harm at all, I don't know what it does. Let me know. Thanks.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

I would suggest that if you are aroung people smoking anything, that you have very good ventalation in the room. Or, step into another room while they are doing so.

If they are your friends, they will go into another room for you.

There isn't much nicotene in recreational smoking product, so it probably isn't as big of deal as being around nicotene.
