spots on my lower left back appear

Spots have appeared on my lower left back like a group of 5 of them. They are slightly darker then avg. skin color. what does thi mean?

They are not raised, but smooth. I would say any where from a centimeter in diameter to an inch even. They are a skin colored just a little darker.
I have a history of jaundice, and I just started smoking. Probably you will tell me to stop smoking but if you can prove a corrolation then i will.
