Mucus in stool concerns
Sent to Health Experts September 22 01:14 PM

Every once in awhile, say about once a week or so, I see a little bit of mucus on the outside of my stool. It's not a lot and never covers the whole stool, its just a small glob. And it always occurs when my stool is large and kind of hard. Is this something to be afraid of? I don't have any abdominal pain other then the usual generalized random aches in pains I'm told everyone gets.
I'm 25. I've had a DRE and blood tests, all fine. I go usually once a day, twice once in awhile.

Stool normally contains a small amount of mucus. Larger amounts of mucus can be related to irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, a bacterial infection, or a bowell obstruction, but not in the absence of other symptoms. If you develop pain, blood in stools, or other changes in bowel habits, you may choose to schedule a Physical exam. Otherwise, follow a good diet (high in fiber, and complex carbs, low in simple sugars, processed foods and yeasts, and 64 oz of water daily), and avoid smoking and alcohol. (well okay-do your best!)

Reply to Christy Hammond's Post: What is a larger amount? Does what I describe sound like a large amount? Is any visible amount considered large?

I apologize for not being more specific. Large amounts would indicate enough mucous to change the consistancy of the stool (loose stools), or frequent stools (3+ daily) all containing mucous. If you feel concerned, you should follow your instincts, and call your family Doctor and request a physical and stool analysis.
