I'm a 63 year-old man. For the past 6 mos. or longer, especially at night when in bed, I occassionally cough up a small amount of a mucous-like substance the consistency of jello, which contains what appears to be small brownish specks within it. I don't smoke cigarettes, but I do smoke marijuana mixed with a little tobacco, daily, maybe two or three times a day, but especially in the evenings.
Occasionally I feel a dull pain in my back, or chest, especially when I have smoked. I have no symptoms of shortness of breath, although when I walbriskly uphill I sometimes feel that same dull pain in my upper back.

Optional Information:
Male , Age: 63

Already Tried:
Trying to stop smoking pot/tobacco completely.

It sounds like you are coughing up a mucus plug from the base of the lungs. What we need to identify is whether the flakes of brown are actually blood or whether they are inhaled material.

Smoking any sort of tobacco or other product will put you at risk of obstructive airways disease and more seriously cancer.

Dull pain could be inflammatory response, if the pain is not localised then it indicates that there visceral lining of the lung is being irritated and we need to identify why.

I would suggest a visit to your doctor and either a x ray or CT scan may be necessary,

In the meantime I do recommend that you stop smoking any sort of inhaled material.

Does this help?
