Question

I just quit smoking about 2 months ago. I smoked off ...

Sent to Health Experts May 31, 2007 5:48 p.m.

I just quit smoking about 2 months ago. I smoked off and on for about 6 years. With the heaviest period being up until the last 2 months. I feel great and am doing fine, no feelings of withdrawals. Here is my concern totally unrelated. My parents have never known that I smoked. Unbelievable, I know but it's true. I am supposed to be going in for foot surgery and will have to take all the pre-op tests of course. I don't want them to know that I used to smoke. I don't want to lie and say that I never smoked but then I don't want my parents to find out. I know this might seem silly but when doing pre-op tests, can doctors tell that I used to smoke? EVEN if it's been 2 months since I have been completely smoke free?
Thank you for your help.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Hi,

The usual pre operative test would not directly detect that you smoked . But some of the test done like Chest X- Ray / lung function test may give a indirect clue based upon abnormal findings if any .

Thank you for your answer. I won't be needing a chest x-ray as I am going in for out-patient bunion surgery. By the way, I have to add that although I smoked, I am extremely active and have run about 6 miles or more 5-6 days a week and have a healthy diet. Kind of ironic that I did all that and smoked.

I apologize but I still ahve one more thing to ask and then I will pay my deposit. I will have to take the following tests though: EKG, Sebum HCG, CBC, Comprehensive Metabolic Panel, PT/PTT, and a UA. It will not show up that I used to smoke in these tests? Another thing is that it asks on the patient forms if I smoke. But I don't smoke anymore and I don't want to answer it but I'm afraid they will find out. I know this sounds all so silly but it would really devastate my parents to know that I used to smoke as they were former smokers ages ago and are extremely against it. Thank you for understanding

Now I don't know what to do since my parents are taking care of the operation forms and whatnot. It was hard to quit and admit that I had been smoking for too long but I didn't realize that it was going to end up being a situation where this seems worse. If I didn't mention a previous history of smoking, would it really cause problems? Thank you for your responses I appreciate it.
