I had a double by pass surgery the day before Thanksgiving. Everything went very well but when I woke up my left hand was not working. At first the nurse kept saying it was because I had an IV and my had was on a IV board but I just knew something was wrong. I called it to the Dr.''s attention and they called in Physical Therapy. They said my radial nerve was not working right. I have drop hand, I am unable to lift my wrist, reach out and grasp, (although if I get something in my reach between my fingers I can grip it), I cannot fully rotate my arm from hand down to hand up, I have decreased sensation or numness and tingling and that hand and arm is weaker than the other. I have seen a nerologist who said it should come back but that it would take a lot of time improve, which left me very apprehensive. I guess my question is what caused this and what kind of prognosis am I looking forward to.

Did you have the radial artery removed from that arm for the bypass?

Assuming you did not have any problems with the arm before surgery it is likely that the arm was placed out on a board during surgery.

The chances of trauma to the arm are rare but possible, including the arm being twisted when you were moved onto and from the operating table.

So What kins of prognosis am I facing? Will this be something permanent, is there a fix or is it just a waiting game to see if it comes back or not?
