I had surgery for an esphogeal hernia w/fundoplication ...

I had surgery for an esphogeal hernia w/fundoplication w/nisson and recently had an ugi due to severe after affects of the surgery.I got the report back and it states that the surgery was performed distal to hiatal hernia.can you please explain exactly what that means? thank you
