I had hernia surgery 8 years ago. The incision has healed, but if I push on the incision or have an extremely hard bowel movement, I can feel sensations in "close by" parts of my abdomen. It doesn''t appear to be getting worse and is not life altering or painful. Is this normal nerve damage or scar tissue from the surgery and should I be concerned? Thanks.

Hello and welcome to Just Answer;

It is very possible that scar tissue has formed, which is very common following surgery and usually does not cause any problems. Regarding sensory issues, sensation usually returns within 1 year of the incisional site, but in some cases, it may not ever. If this sensation should ever get 'worse', painful, or recurrent constipation should occur, you should follow-up with your physician because scar tissue can grow 'get carried away - in terms' and wrap around other organs, but do know that this is rare.
