Endoscopic Nasal Surgery Recovery Time

Sent to Health Experts February 04 08:59 AM

I had nasal surgery-endoscopically to repair a deviated septum, ethmoidectomy, and right maxillary antrostomy four months ago. I am experienceing headaches right and left upper jaw, retororbital headaches and numbness of my throat and lips, intermittently since that time. Could one of the cranial nerves been damaged during the surgery? What is the usual post operative recuperation period ?

It is possibel that you have had a minor CSF leak during surger that has lead to these episodes of recurrent headaches, this is a difficult to diagnose condition, and the doctor seeing you needs to be specifically looking and testing for it to make the diagnosis.
Nerve injury is generally relatd to the optic nerve (eye) and is rare.
Your symptoms do not seem to be related to this.

Thank you for your answer, Dr. Gupta. I am a Registered Nurse, and appreciate speific information. Interestingly, I was speaking to an anesthesiologist who also works with chronic pain, and she too mentioned a CSF leak. Post op, I had several episodes of bleeding from my nose and the surgeon repacked it. Once the surgeon was very rough, and I had an excrutiating headache to the occital area; this headache required two vicodin, and xanex and a dark room before it subsided. Are there specific tests to test for a CSF leak. This week I have had only two headaches with the numbness to my lips and throat. I have been taking Depakote 500mg daily since 1/18/06, and Naprosyn 500 mg BID. Perhaps the Depakote is working? Another symptom with these headaches, my right or left maxillary sinus feels congested/obstructed. Thank you for your time.
