Question

Abdominal pain-still 4 months after abdominal hysterectomy

Sent to Health Experts February 07, 2006 9:58 p.m.

In 9/05, I underwent a laparoscopic hysterctomy with removal of both tubes and both ovaries. Because of hemorrhaging from vaginal cuff/cervix, I required exploratory laparotomy. I was discovered to have adnomyosis. Have long historyof chronic pelvic pain (20+ yrs.) I am now 50 y.o. Had diagnostic lap done at age 30, no biopisie taken then, endo was ruled out at that time. Since hysterectomy, I have ocntinued to have pain from naval region to pubic bone all the time, esp. bad around naval area. I also have developed severe abdominal cramping and bouts of diarrhea. The abdominal cramps are low, happen with abrupt onset. I dopn't know if I shoudl go to gyn or to another specialist. I still have lots of pain. WHen I cough, I have severe pain in abdominal region. Have had urinary stuff evaluated and this is not the problem. Please help. Need to know if diarrhea is common after hysterectomy is done--I am 4 months post op. Thanks.

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 50

I have told the gyn who did the surgery adn he looks at me like I have three heads and in disbelief. I had bladder surgery done TVT procedure just before the hysterectomy and BSO were done and this went fine and have been doing great with this aspect of the surgery and had zero comoplications with this part and also incontinence (stress) ahs totally abated. Urologist says nothing is abnormal with urogential tract. I jsut have these terrbile abdominal cramps and diarrhea all the time and still have lots of pain around umeblical area esp. but also from naval to pubic bone area. It just hurts, all the time. Nothing makes it better nothing makes it worse, just there.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

This sounds more like a disorder of the intestinal tract. You may need to see a specialist in bowel problems. Occasionally after abdominal surgery then inflamation of the peritoneal layer might give you pain and inflammation. Have you had any scans/xrays?

Haven't had any scans or x-rays other than the CT scan which was done 11 days post op because of left lower lung lobe pain. This problem was attributable to severe anemia and after transfusions totaly resolved. If I saw a colon specialist, would colonoscopy be likely required or a small bowel follow throguh, camera pill swallow to check out the small intestine? The pain is the worst around the naval area and I have constantly had abrupt onset of abdominal cramping and several episodes of diarrhea a day. Because of other problems, I have been on narcotic maintenance for years and have always had probs. with constipation due to this. Now, have frequent bouts of diarrhea instead, all since the hysterectomy. Another thought: I was found to have severe adenomyosis at the time of surgery and because of significant hemorrhaging, frankly believe the surgeon didn't do a lot of searching for other areas of involvement. I had made things clear that I felt I had endometriosis for many years, had al lthe signs and symptoms and constant chronic pelvic pain bythe time of surgery. Is it possible that I am having an endometrial plaque problem now/adhesions causing my symptoms. Thanks for your help. Susan
