Question

I am VERY prone to stys and had about 5 removed 3 years

Sent to Health Experts March 09, 2006 11:28 p.m.

I am VERY prone to stys and had about 5 removed 3 years ago. Well, I was okay for two years, but this past year I've gotten 3 within the past 5 months. They harden up even after my attempts at warm compressing. I don't know what to do. Is there any way to get rid of these without operation? What's causing them? I remove my makeup, always, and barely wear it at all. Just on weekends. I wear my glasses most of the time as well so I don't know why they'd get contaminated. It's embarrassing and very painful. I have another one that has just started up right now...are there any cremes I can use to minimize all 3?? My doctor gave me Tobradex after my surgery and it worked very well, however, I lost my tube and he would not perscribe me another one because apparently it has steroids in it. Is there anything similar that I can get??

Hello

You could try some cortisone cream, being very careful not to get any into your eye. It's over the counter, and contains steroids, but in a safer dosage. Keep up the warm packing as well.

What exactly is cortisone cream?? Is it effective in cases like this? If the stys have hardened, is it pretty much impossible to get rid of w/o surgery?

My wife is an eye specialist, and I asked her opinion this.
Here is what she has to say.
What you have sounds like a case of recurrent stye.
The things to keep in mind here are predisposing factors like
MEIBOMITIS - Inflammation of the meibomian glands
Blepharitis - Inflammation of the lid margin
What these do is that increase the chances of getting recurrent stye.
The diagnosis can be done any competent eye specialsit (if he/she is looking for it).
The treatment may include a course of oral Doxycylcine and certain specific measures like treatment of dandruff (if existing) etc.

Thank you! The stye is in the same spots as it was before...they harden within 4 days no matter how much warm compress I do.

Any way to reduce these bumps w/o surgery?
