Question

Sent to Health Experts May 22, 2006 3:20 p.m.

I have terrible knees due to athletics, and particulary, football. I had both knees scoped 20 years ago (I am 43), but there was more damage than mere cartilage damage. A couple of doctors have told me that I have the worst knees they have ever seen.   I have been able to live a fairly active and mostly pain-free life until a couple of months ago. My knees constantly ache and I have lost all mobility in them. I can't straighten them all the way out and I can hardly move them back toward my buttocks. What is a good way to increase my range of motion, and hopefully, alleviate some of my pain?

Have they discussed knee replacement surgery with you or is that not an option they are willing to consider yet?

They said eventually I would need it, but I am still pretty young. What has caused my loss of range of motion so quickly? I coached football last fall with no problems, but after the first of the year my knees became still and ached. What can I do to get back some range of motion?
