Your symptoms are consistent with internal hemorrhoids. Conservative treatment involves increasing fiber and liquid intake and (if necessary) using over-the-counter stool softener such as Colace.
Hemorrhoids are like varicose (e.g. swollen) veins in the legs. They are caused by excessive straining when having a bowel movement. Since softer schools are easier to move, there is less straining and the internal hemorrhoids should reduce in size -- although, this will not happen immediately.
If making the above adjustments does not result in improvement, you will need to see your doctor. Sometimes surgery is required to remove internal hemorrhoids.
