I am due to have out patient surgery this coming Tuesday, and I have been taking Phentermine to loose weight (I did not disclose this info to the doctor). What can the side effects be with the Phentermine and Anesthesia?

I would tell your doctor right away about this. Do not take the Phentermine at all until you talk to the doctor. Phentermine will raise your blood pressure and your heart rate. This can cause false readings on the monitors which can be bad if something goes wrong. Also, taking this medication for long periods of time can increase your risk of heart related problems which may worsened by the anesthesia. Please tell your doctor about this on Monday.

Forgive me I just want to make sure I understand completely...When you say that the anesthesia can worsen the heart related problems...Do you mean later on or during surgery. I have not been taking it that long and do not take it everyday, but will definately take your advice and let the doctor know tomorrow at my pre-op appt.

Hi. I'm sorry for not clarifying. I meant that the anesthesia along with taking the Phentermine could worsen a heart related condition that you may not know about. Since you have not been taking Phentermine that long I would say that you are not at risk for this happening. Phentermine raises the blood pressure and the pulse. Over a long period of time this puts quite a strain on the heart and result in damage or other conditions. Thank you for following up. If my answer was helpful please hit the accept button. Thank you.
