Question

How long after Lasik surgery can you resume to wear eye makeup?

Sent to Health Experts September 26, 2006 7:57 p.m.

I had Lasik a week and a half ago and instructions state not to rub eyes for 4-6 weeks, so removing eye makeup would require rubbing eyes, so is this how long you need to wait to apply eye makeup?

Thanks for your question. I think that if removing makeup would require you to rub your eyes in any way whatsoever, then you should not apply makeup until at least 4 weeks post-operatively. It might be reasonable at that point to be able to start to wear makeup again, but place a quick call to the ophthalmologist who performed the lasik and inquire first (they will likely have a nurse or other assistant who will be able to tell you, fairly easily, without having to actually speak with your physician - since this can always be somewhat tough). They might have you wait until 6 weeks.

But speak with your physician's office, as each provider will (often) have different post-op instructions. In addition, it is also generally recommended that you avoid pools/hot tubs for 1-2 months post-op as well. Stressful, contact sports should also be avoided for a month or two.

So place a quick call tomorrow, but I would wait at least 4 weeks before eye makeup.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions - I'm more than happy to help.

Take care (and enjoy the lasik - I'm still doing it the old-fashioned way, with glasses and contact lenses...) - Dr. Fay
