Question

Buried penis.

Buried penis.

My son, who is 10 years old, has what I believe to be a buried penis. It looks more like an extra belly button than a penis. The pediatrician says I have nothing to worry about, but I am a medical transcriptionist and have run across this several times. It did not show up until he was circumcised. He is overweight, which may contriute, but I worry that he might need surgery. Should I insist the pediatrician refer him to a urologist for a check? He is hitting puberty early (hairy legs, pubic hair), but the penis remains hidden. He is beginning to feel self conscious about it and I do not want him to feel different than other boys. I have heard this is common in overweight boys, but, as his mother, am very worried about the need for intervention. Any advice would be welcome.

Have questioned the doc multiple times, and he is not worried, but from what I have transcribed this may be a major problem. I am especially concerned that it has not improved with the onset of puberty

Hello,

A buried penis is a normal-sized penis that lays hidden in the pubic fat pad. Some children are born this way, and for some it happens after circumcision. It is common in infants and toddlers, and occasionally seen in older children and obese adolescents. If the penis can be easily exposed by gently pulling on it or by pressing down on the surrounding fat pad, then the situation will usually correct itself over time. Sometimes surgery is needed for concealed penis. Either way, results are excellent.
