Sent to Health Experts October 15 11:57 PM

My urologist has recommended I have surgery for a rectocele and a cystocele. After a cystoscope and an enlargement of the uretha he informed me I had both of these conditions and on a scale from 1 to 3 mine were definitely a 3..3 being the worse...I've had numerous UTI's this past yr. and have had rectal problems and severe constipation for years..What I am scared about is that I didn't think a urologist did rectal surgery..Is this a normal thing? He can correct both at one time? He's also going to use some kind of mesh sling to lift my bladder and I've heard scary things about that..I'm really worried and having a
hard time deciding what to do..thank you

Hi Proverbs,

You raise a very GOOD POINT.

Although many Urologists are well-trained (& experienced) in correcting rectoceles (and other rectal problems), they are not the BEST-qualified, if considered as a group.

If I were in your shoes, I would personally want a highly-reputed Colorectal Surgeon to fix the rectocele problem; while a Urologist (or OB/GYN) dealt w/ the Cystocele issue. In many cases (depending on Insurance authorization), it can be arranged for BOTH surgeons to be in the operating rm the same day, so both procedures can be done at virtually the same time.

Just something for you to consider, as you prepare/research for this important surgery.

Reply to Dr. Steve's Post: Doctor Steve, so do I understand you to say that there are qualified urologist to perform the rectocele? My colo rectal doctor is excellent but she practices at another hospital..My urologist has a wonderful bedside manner and really put me at ease when he performed the last procedure...It is important that he be Board Certified? I've heard through the grapvine that he isn't..He's practiced for about 20 yrs. now. I had complications yrs. ago(1988) with a hystorectomy and repair of of cyctocele and rectocele and I do not want that again...And I trusted the gyn. that performed that. Do you know how they correct the rectocele? Thank you so much for your advice. I do consider this a very important decision.

Hi Proverbs,

Given what you just stated, I definitely would NOT recommend the Urologist to do the rectocele repair. YES: being Board-Certified is critically important (that is the "Gold-Standard" that insures that an MD has kept up with all the Continuing Medical Education [CME] and Examination & Training standards to be 'at par or above' (relative to his peers in the field) in this day and age.

Do you KNOW if your Colo-rectal Surgeon is Board-Certified? [If he/she IS, I would rather that he/she do BOTH the cystocele & rectocele repair, than the other way around!] Most Colo-rectal surgeons are well-versed in cystoc. repairs.

As far as the METHODOLOGY of rectocele repair, I don't want to give you mis-information (many advances in recent years, w/ progress of Lasers & Micro-surgery), but here's a public-access link that lists some of the Basics of the surgery:
