Help for short term depression

Sent to Health Experts October 23, 2006 4:39 p.m.

I am going through what is hopefully a short period of extreme sadness (depression) because I have been housebound for the better part of 6 weeks. We recently moved so I lost my support system - shortly after moving in I had major knee surgery where I am non weight bearing for 6-8 weeks and in a machine 6-8 hours a day that moves my leg back and forth.
My doctor prescribed lexpro when I told him my symtoms - unfortunately it says it takes 4-6 weeks to work - by then i'll be REALLY depressed - hopefully when I am able to get out and about by myself, I'll be feeling better.
Is there anything out there that acts more quickly. I don't think I can wait 6 weeks to feel better.
Thanks,

Hi

Thankyou for your question.

In terms of drug therapy the fastest acting antidepressant on the market is escitalopram - CAN kick in after 2-3 weeks.

Usually 10mg per day.

Isn't this the same thing as Lexpro?

My apologies - I'm based in the Uk where the trade name for escitalopram is Cipralex.

Your Dr has made a good choice , do not be too surprised if you start to improve prior to the 6 weeks you have been told.
