Hi Rosemarie--so SORRY to hear about your sister; I'm happy to help, but have a few questions:

-How was Diagnosis made (plain xrays; CT scan; or MRI)?

-What EXACT part of the skull is fracture at?

-Is there bleeding INTO the brain recesses (e.g.- 'subdural hematoma')?

-How is her MENTAL Status right now (eg. alert? comatose? near-comatose? etc)?

-Have doctors discussed surgery (i.e. to remove internal bleed or clots) as a treatmt option?

1. CT scan every 5 hours apart

2. fracture back of her head

3. yes bleeding from one of her large arteries

4. said surgery only if emergency as she could hemrage
5. Doc. said she will probably stay in hospital up to 2 wks. and will be unbalanced.(permanent)

Hi--thanks for reply.

It sounds as if your sister has the Dx of:

Intracerebral Hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain)--caused by the fall and resulting skull fracture. Here's a weblink w/ more info on it:

http://www.healthsquare.com/mc/fgmc9007.htm

As the article implies, this is a VERY serious condition, with a significant morbidity & mortality rate (I can't quote % figures, because that would depend on ALL the medical details & specifics of her case). Needless to say, her condition should be thought of as:

Very Serious and Guarded Condition

But, BY the END of this week, you should have a good idea of what her long-term Prognosis & Condition will be like...I'm sure her doctors will keep in close contact w/ you & the family.

I'm praying (with you) that she PULLS through with the BEST possible outcome.

I hope you found this to be helpful-IF SO, please hit **ACCEPT** (Green) as you read this Answer. (Positive Feedbacks appreciated also). THANKS !

Best regards, --Dr. Steve
