When I go to sleep my hands become numb and sometimes painful. I had neck surgery a few years ago for a crushed disk, and these symptoms have become more pronounced since that time. Is this a serious concern?

Reply to Doctor_Manju's Post: I am a 42 year old female. The syptoms started during my pregnancy 5 years ago and became much worse, actually unbearable, resulting in the surgery 4 and a half years ago. I had some numbness after the surgery but it has become much worse over the past couple of years. I have also gained about 40 pounds during this time period. My blood sugar and blood pressure have allways been normal, however my blood pressure has become higher over the last couple of years.

Reply to Doctor_Manju's Post: Just my hands are affected. During the time period that this has gotten worse I have been on a series of antidepressants, the most recent being Mertazapine.

Hello

The complaints you have described are because of Herniated disc.

Nerve roots are compressed by the hernaiated intervertebral disc & cause numbness. You need:

1.Spinal X- ray

2. Spinal MRI.

3.EMG to determine the exact nerve roots that arecompressed.

4.Nerve conduction velocity test.

Take tab Ibubrufen 400mg BD.

Also loose your weight ,this will help you greatly.this may be an important reason for worsening your symptoms.

Also consult Neurologist for physical examination & treatment accordinglly.
