Sent to Health Experts July 08, 2007 7:53 p.m.

i have been diagnosed with a (complex) ovarian cyst which i think just means it has "debris in it"; i am having an ultrasound tomorrow to see if it is gone (i've had 2 ct scans); if it is not gone, how do they get rid of it? (vaginally? surgery?) will they wait for another 1 or 2 cycles? (this is my second ovarian cyst in 9 months); both of which threw my entire body out of whack (nauseau, dizziness, abdominal pain, horrible!) lastly, is it true that if i go back on the pill, i will no longer get ovarian cysts? and also, i have also read that they are in no way linked to ovarian cancer. is this true as well? (you can see i do a lot of reading) on web md.....unfortunately

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Complex ovarian cysts are in most cases only monitored carefully. A decision to go for surgery will be taken only when it has been persistent for quite some time.

A complex cyst like this also requires the CA125 test. This is a tumor maker for ovary. Complex ovarian cysts can be related to malignancy. Simple ovarian cysts are considered unrelated to malignancy. Treatment of the cyst usually depends a great deal on the level of this tumor marker. If the CA125 level is high, along with the cyst, then it would be treated more aggressively with surgery. If it is low, it would usually be treated with monitoring only.

The surgery can be done both abdominally by laparoscopy and vaginally. It depends on factors like the size of the cyst, the preference of the surgeon, etc. Abdominal approach would be more common.

Going back on the pill would cause Simple ovarian cysts not to occur again. However, complex cysts may occur even on the pill.

You should discus with your doctor about doing the CA125 test if it has not been done already.
