Apocrine metaplasia is a condition where there is enlargement and dilation of the acini and lactiferous ducts of the breasts. The lactiferous ducts are thin tubes through which the milk produced in the acini (breast lobes) reach the tip of the nipple.
The condition is believed to be due to irregular hormone stimulation during the reproductive years, usually an excess of estrogen.
The breasts feel irregular, tender and lumpy.
The condition is benign and there is no added risks for breast cancer.
A biopsy susually reveals apocrine metaplasia. You will need annual or 6 monthly checkups depending on the findings at biopsy.
Treatment consists initially of hormone therapy with progesterone. but surgery may be required if there is no response to hormones.
