Hello Edward,

After 15 years of ankle sprain you are still having pain in the leg, indicates that you are having some complication of the previous injury. This can be any one of the following:
1. There may be an associated bone fracture which may have not healed properly .
2. There may be chronic ankle instability with persistent discomfort and weakness and pain in the leg. Read more here
3. There may also be associated foot injury that went unnoticed.
4. If rehabilitation of the ankle injury was not done right away. it will not hael properly.

For complications of ankle sprain or improperly healed injury, surgery may be an option.

Surgical options include:

  • Arthroscopy
A surgeon looks inside the joint to see if there are any loose fragments of bone or cartilage, or part of the ligament caught in the joint.
  • Reconstruction
A surgeon repairs the torn ligament with stitches or suture, or uses other ligaments and/or tendons found in the foot and around the ankle to repair the damaged ligaments.

You may visit an orthopaedic surgeon if you are having trouble walking and need teatment for it.
