Hematoma post surgery

Sent to Health Experts November 05 09:16 AM

Hi, my dad has undergone hematoma surgery to his head. It is the 3rd day after his surgery. He is at home and has a blood pressure of a 203/103 9hrs ago. He has a history of high blood pressure. He took his bp meds and I rechecked his bp and it went down to 175/80. After 5 hrs later, his bp went up to 185/90. He is complaining of headaches, and I given my dad darvocet prescribed by his doctor. He hasnt eaten all day/night, and all he takes in is medications. He has thrown up once, 2hrs ago. What seems to be the problem and is there anything I can do to help him?

greatly appreciated.
Karen

Reply to Dr J Burk's Post: Hi Dr. Burk,

I'm not certain if its an intracranial hematoma. After the surgery, my dad had a small pouch taped on to his head, blood was dripping. He may have intracranial hematoma done. According to the papers the doctor gave me, is called subdural hematoma.

His headaches started the 1st day after his hematoma surgery. Taking the prescribed darvocet, helps his headaches. He takes them every 4hrs.

Dr. Jef,

My dad felt confused about 5hrs ago when his bp was high. Not now, I just asked him. I rechecked his bp, it is now 175/90.

His headaches has been the same, but not worse. As long as he takes his darvocet tablets.

My dad was experiencing uncomfortable bloating to his stomach 5hrs ago, he felt really gassy but he could not release gas. His last bowel movement was yesterday, the day he was discharged from the hospital. He still feels bloated but not as bad as 5hrs ago.

Thank you,
Karen

I would not be concerned about your father's blood pressure and suggest that you do not need to check it so often.

It is normal to have a headache after this type of surgery.

Warning signs would include

1.worsening of the headache

2.drowsiness

3.confusion

4.persistent vomiting

If any of these occur you will need to get him seen by his doctor again.
