I have gastroparesis for the past year. I have been lucky that my symptoms are mild compared to some of the ones I have read about. I usually get nausea and severe stomach pain What do you think about accupuncture or the drug called domperidone. I am deathly afraid of Reglan. I have been trying some homepathic remedies and received some comfort.

Optional Information:
Female, Age: 41, California

Already Tried:
homepathic and diet

Reply to DoctorS's Post: They don't know the cause of my gastro, I am not diabetic. I am pretty much a healthy person.I execise three times a week and have cut out all meat because of digestion. I would love to know how I got this. In the last four years while being pregnant with my two children I had the stomach flu four times. Twice in each pregnancy. I have read that sometimes that mey be a reason. Sept. 06 after being at a wedding all day. I over ate and ended up in the emergency room. At first they thought is was gastritis, after several test I was told I had Gastroparesis. Some days are good and others are not. It doesn't even matter I eat. I hate drugs for fear of the side effects, I have heard some great things about the drug not approved in the U.S. I'm deperate I have a three year old and five year old and I want to be around for my children.

Dear Customer (name blocked for privacy),

Gastroparesis is most commonly associated with diabetes but other associations include GI disease like gallbladder, stomach and pancreas, it can arise from viral syndroms, acid reflux, collagen vascular disease and smooth muscle disorder, metabolic disorders and thyroid disorders. Of all of these, the one probably worth investigating is your thyroid function to see whether you might benefit from thyroid replacement therapy.

I understand your dislike of drugs and I am attaching a link from the mayo clinical that discusses therapies, both pharmacologic as well as dietary that may be helpful to you: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/gastroparesis/DS00612/DSECTION=8. I also understand your concern for the use of reglan; however domperidone is a similar drug but is not available in the US because of concerns over its side effect profile.

Finally, accupuncture has been demonstrated to be effective for gastroparesis (however with pharmacologic therapy together). I am including a study from 2004 that demonstrated this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15510787

I hope this is helpful to you and please let me know if I can answer any more questions.

Dear Customer (name blocked for privacy),

Not a problem - if you have hypothyroid, i.e. your thyroid is not working fully (which I only suggested because it is a common cause of gastroparesis), you can test for this and if it is the case, supplemental thyroid hormone can be given to normalize the levels (which could possibly relieve the gastroparesis). Here is more information: http://patients.uptodate.com/topic.asp?file=endocrin/8039

Please let me know if I can answer any more questions.
