Question

Can the symptoms of a stroke be the same as a nuevous ...

Sent to Health Experts February 19 10:51 a.m.

Can the symptoms of a stroke be the same as a nuevous breakdown? Chest pain, numbness on the right side, dizzyness and loss of balance which has gotten worse over time. My husband went to emergency room with these symptons- all tests were run and found no problem with heart, arteries, brain -He is 78 years old and also has lost 25 pounds in the last 6 months- He is 6 feet tall and usually weighs 195. He has had little appitite and worries about everything. He has always had a controling personality and somewhat negative in his remarks. I feel like he had a stroke, but the CT scan and MRI show no damage, only age related change. Thanks for an immediate response, Margaret in Baton Rouge, La.

Optional Information:
Female, Age: 73, Louisiana

Already Tried:
4 days in hospital for him an all test run and were negative for stroke or heart attack

Hi there.

The normal MRI rules out a stroke.

Do you think he may be suffering from anxiety?

Yes, It could be anxiety, but the symptons of numbness and pain were so severe that he was in complete colapse and I had to call 911 at his request I may add. The orders from the hospital was to make an appointment with a neurologist for further test. Do you think he needs this or a phychologist that can prescribe anxiety meds and also-- how long do these meds take before he will feel better? Our primary care doctor has been aware of his symptons, but has not been agressive in his care ofmy husband.

Hi

Anxiety is a real common cause of chest pains and resultant visits to the ER.

I'm going to post you a look that includes a list of symptoms that those suffering from anxiety can get.

Have a careful read of it then get back to me with your thoughts.

I was giving a reply to your question when I was cut off. I will try to shorten my answer. No history of Phys. and only other medical in stint in heart 6 years ago. No smoking- quit about 10 years ago. Was given 6 weeks of PT a year ago when balance was first noticed. Soon after he became light headed and dizzy constantly-some days betterthan others. His meds are Norvasc 2mg---Xanax 0.25 mg.--2 @day---and Ambien 10mg. He has been dispondent, talk of suicide, wanting answers to his dizzyness and other symptoms when none were given that made since to him. Your answer to me that it was anxiety makes since. Hospital release requests that he see a nurologist or do you think a Physchiatrist that could prescribe the right meds for this and also convince him that it takes time to feel better and I hope will take care of his dizzyness.

Hi

As he is despondent and talking of suicide then he clearly has prominent symptoms of depression in addition to his possible anxiety problem.

I would consider a consult with a psychiatrist to be an urgent priority.

There are several excellent treatments available that can be prescribed.

Hello Mam

I agree with Dr J Burk that he needs a consultation with a Psychiatrist for his present symptoms,but in addition he should also be seen by a Neurologist because we have to find the cause for light headedness and dizziness, difficulty in balance,which are although common in Psychiatric disorder but are also in other medical illness, {he has history of stent insertion in heart,has probably Hypertension(Norvasc) , and there is no previous history of any Psychiatric illness.}

Regards
