It can be manageable as far as the symptoms that arise from this, but there is no exact treatment or cure for Medullary sponge kidney. There is a risk for recurrent kidney infections, stones, or blood in the urine. They will treat these symptoms when and if they arise. Every individual is different and will react to this condition different. It has to be monitored and with proper treatment many people live long and active lives. Some more information about this is below. I hope this information will be helpful to you.

Medullary sponge kidney is a rare abnormality of the small drainage tubes in the kidney. It's present at birth (congenital). But it usually doesn't cause problems until adulthood. The cause isn't known.

Medullary sponge kidney is characterized by widening of some of the drainage tubes (distal tubules and collecting ducts), which slows the normal flow of urine through them. This condition typically causes no signs or symptoms. But signs and symptoms may include:

  • Kidney stones, usually calcium-containing stones
  • Recurrent kidney infections
  • Blood in the urine (hematuria)

A doctor may confirm a diagnosis of medullary sponge kidney by X-ray of the kidneys after injection with contrast dye (excretory urogram). There's no specific treatment for this condition. Treatment is directed at managing its signs and symptoms.
