i have had swollen tonsils with no other symptoms for

I have had swollen tonsils with no other symptoms for several months. What could this be? I have a white spot on one side. I have tried to find something like this online but with no luck. Can you give me some idea of what it could be?

I have a dr. appt friday, however I am concerned with the amount of time they have been this way. I looked at them the other day and they look like scar tissue on the sides of them now. I can feel something in my esphogus (sp?) when I swallow sometimes. I went to my General Practitioner and she set an appointment for and ENT. Would that be normal?
