I had been on zoloft 100 mg with no bad side effects.

Sent to Health Experts February 13 12:49 PM

I had been on zoloft 100 mg with no bad side effects. However, my dose was increased to 150 mg daily. I also take 10 mg of Buspar daily. About a week and a half after upping my Zoloft to 150 mg I developed severe double vision. It seemed to subside slightly, but got worse again. I've had it for two weeks now. About five days ago, with my doctor's advice, I lowered my dose back to 100 mg. Since then I have also skipped a couple of doses as well because of the eye symptoms. They symptoms continue. They are worse in the evening or when outside in the bright light. My eye muscles hurt and I feel a certain fluttering sensation at times in and around my eyes. If I close one eye, I can see fine with the other. Also, if I put a finger against one eye as though to steady the eyeball, I can see fine. My weight is 140 pounds, I'm 36, and a male. Could this be from Zoloft? or is it likely something more serious? How long should I give the Zoloft to get out of my system and the symptoms to resolve?

Hi,

ZOLOFT is well known to cause the symptoms that you are describing, including eye pain, lacrimation, double vision, dry eyes, pink eyes, photophobia (difficulty in seeing in bringh lights etc.).

In any case you ought to get an ophthalmologist opinon to rule out a primary eye disease, however the most likely cause is ZOLOFT.

This side-effect should resolve over a the next few weeks,

So, even though I was on zoloft for about 2 or 3 weeks at the 150 mg level, it could take a few weeks to resolve the eye trouble? Also, I was wondering if I should completely discontinue the medication until symptoms disappear or if I should just lower it to 100 mg as the doctor directed. Thanks

Ideally if you can then you should discontinue the medicine. However, you may risk side effects due to dicontinuing the medicines. Then I would suggest that you can try reducing the dose to say 50mg alternate day till the time your symptoms disappear. Then you can get back to the normal dose. Do remember to discuss any change of medication with your primary care physician.
