For the past several months when I lay on my right side or my stomach I feel a 'knot' in my mid to upper right abdomen. Recently I have started feeling it all the time, even when standing or sitting. I sometimes get a cramping feeling in my lower mid abdomen, not sure if this is related to the 'knot' or not. I also have started experiencing more gas, as I belch and burp all the time. I haven't had any test done as I don't have insurance but my doctor thinks it may be a hernia. What could cause this?

Your symptoms are not specific enough to point to a single diagnosis, however here are a few possibilities, Please remember that the diagnosis can only be confirmed by a detailed examination and tests.
  • Acid peptic disease
  • Hiatal hernia
  • Giardiasis (or any other similar infections)
  • Reflux
  • intraluminal pathology (growth in various areas of the stomach/ intestine)
These would require a number of tests including ultrasound, X ray, barium meals, CT scan abdomen, esophageal probe, stool test etc. to find the exact cause. Suffice to say that since the symptoms are worsening I would definitely feel that you need a detailed evaluation (preferably by a gastroenterologist).
In the meantime trying some reflux meds, taking plenty of oral fluids, increased fruits and vegetables portions and reducing highly fatty foods maybe an option that can help in some of these conditions.
